I’ve recently seen some posts that concern me in chiropractic forums on social media. Largely the context of these posts is negative and often misinformed. Typically, the posts ridicule athletic trainers. In some cases, the critique is pointed toward a specific athletic trainer. Fair enough. Every profession has a spectrum of great to not-so-great. In other cases, the negative critique is pointed towards the profession at large. These posts are misinformed.

The chiropractic profession by choice has excluded aggressive interventions, such as prescription medication and surgery, from its treatment methodology. The Illinois Medical Practice Act specifically prohibits the use of prescription medication and surgery for chiropractic physicians. Of course, even though both prescription medications and conservative interventions can be used in diagnosis, treatment, prevention of disease that can affect the structure or function of the body, there is a big difference between the two.

Recently, I was asked to do a webinar for the ACA (American Chiropractic Association) on the UE (upper extremity). Upper extremity injuries and the throwing athlete are topics about which I’m well versed and passionate. It’s an area that I’m happy to humbly share what I know and admit what I don’t know. The model I used was taking the patient from pain and transitioning him or her into the realm of performance.
