Congress voted to institute a 1-year “doc fix” preventing a 24% pay cut for physicians who treat Medicare patients. This is the 17th patch in 11 years whereby Congress delayed the “doc fix.” Although there was strong bipartisan support in both the House and Senate to repeal the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula responsible for the problem, the doc fix was enacted again. President Obama signed into law the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014 on April 1, 2014.

The Medical Practice Act (MPA] and Rules require everyone licensed under the MPA — DCs, MDs, and DOs — to obtain 150 hours of Continuing Medical Education [CME] for the 36 months preceding July 31 in the year of renewal. All 150 hours may be obtained in formal “Category I” hours or may be divided into two categories, 60 hours of formal education and 150 hours of informal.

The Jurisdiction 6 (Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin) contract was awarded to National Government Services (NGS) on September 27, 2012, the cutover/transition date of September 7th, 2013 is quickly approaching. The ICS has scheduled several Medicare courses throughout the state to assist chiropractic physicians and staff with this transition.
