Victims’ Economic Security and Safety Act (VESSA)

The State of Illinois has a law that requires employers to provide unpaid work leave to employees who are victims of domestic or sexual violence, or who have family members who are victims. This law is known as the Victims’ Economic Security and Safety Act (VESSA). When the law was originally written, it only applied to employers that had more than 15 employees. In 2017, the definition of employee was modified to include an employer with at least one employee. Therefore, VESSA now applies to all ICS members.

Paid Employee Sick Leave Ordinance in Cook County and Chicago

Both Cook County and the City of Chicago have passed ordinances that require employers to provide employees with a certain amount of paid sick leave. In Cook County, the ordinance is called the Cook County Earned Sick Leave Ordinance. In the City of Chicago, the ordinance is called the City of Chicago Paid Sick Leave Ordinance. These ordinances are both in effect now, and the location of your chiropractic office will determine which ordinance you will be required to follow (if any).

2018 Legislative Session Report

The 2018 Spring Legislative Session for the Illinois General Assembly adjourned on May 31, 2018. Over the course of the session, more than 1,500 Senate Bills and 1,900 House Bills were introduced. Throughout the session, the ICS staff reviewed the legislation to address any concerns or impact to the chiropractic profession. Additionally, over the course of the session, the ICS Staff advocated on behalf of the chiropractic profession on several pieces of legislation.

2018 Legislative Session Begins

The 2018 legislative session has started. We are now in the second year of the 100th General Assembly. This means any legislation that was filed last year could very quickly become viable this year. The last few weeks have been filled with legislators filing additional legislation for this session. Over the course of these recent weeks, the Illinois Chiropractic Society has reviewed and analyzed thousands of bills to identify any potential impact on the chiropractic profession.
