President Message – April 2014

In January the ICS board convened in Springfield for our second annual board retreat and planning session. Mr. Baron Hoag, our moderator and the Executive Director of the Ohio State Chiropractic Association, brought insight of another state organization and reinvigorated us with his passion and love for the chiropractic profession. One of the pillars for establishing our retreat purpose was the Simon Sinek lecture, “How Great Leaders Inspire Action”.

Simon Sinek is best known for developing the ‘golden circle,’ a theory that explains one reason why certain individuals and companies are more successful than others. His golden circle keynote explains that some of the most successful organizations and influential leaders, such as Apple and Martin Luther King, think and act in opposite ways than others.

While most companies and leaders start with the idea of what it is they are trying to do or sell, the most distinguished and inspirational start with the question ‘why’.

Sinek talks of the story of Apple and the Wright Brothers as great examples, but the one that totally exemplifies this is the story of Dr. Martin Luther King. Sinek recounts, “In the summer of 1963, 250,000 people got together in the Mall in Washington to hear Martin Luther King speak. There were no emails and no website. How did he do that? He had a gift – he didn’t tell people WHAT needed to change in America. He said ‘I BELIEVE,’ and people who believed what he believed took his cause and made it their own. They told other people and, lo and behold, 250,000 people showed up on the right day at the right time to hear him speak. The question is ‘How many people showed up for him?’ ZERO. They showed up for themselves, for what they believed in. And … the famous speech ‘I have a dream’ … not I have a plan!”

As our board pondered our way back to the Illinois Chiropractic Society’s “why,” we were energized and focused. In the coming months, you will see more and more of the results of our meeting in January. We believe that our new focus will move your offices forward in great ways. My challenge to you is this: find your ‘why’ and tell your patients. They are the ones that need to be moved by emotion.
