On July 20, 2005, Governor Blagojevich signed into law HB 2137 (Public Act 94-277). Although the basic structure of workers’ compensation remains the same, this law represents a major overhaul of the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Act. The amendment provides that the Illinois Industrial Commission is now known as the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission. (https://www2.illinois.gov/sites/iwcc)

The Workers’ Compensation Act amendment has been characterized as labor and business’s negotiated compromise to address concerns about Illinois’ higher-than-average worker’s compensation costs. Many provisions of the previous Act remain unchanged, and some of the changes pertain to disability and death benefits for workers and do not directly affect health care providers. However, some of the changes will have an impact on health care providers, as outlined below. Although the law has been touted as including "cost containment" provisions, many of the changes appear to be beneficial to health care providers.
