All Medical Practice Act licenses are on three-year cycles that begin and expire on the same date for every licensed physician. The current license cycle began August 1, 2023, and will expire on July 31, 2026; the next cycle will run from August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2029, etc.
By law, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) is required to provide, through email, a renewal notice to the licensee’s email address of record at least 60 days prior to the date of expiration; however, usually renewal is opened sometime in April. As a licensed physician, you are required to keep the Department updated with a current e-mail address, which is the address to which your notice will be sent. If, for some reason, you actually fail to receive or open the email notice, you are still fully obligated to renew on time. The ICS recommends that you add a calendar reminder for no later than May 1, 2026, to check whether the Department has started accepting physician renewal applications for the upcoming license cycle.
