Time to Update Your Computer Systems

Microsoft announced that after October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will no longer be supported, meaning it will no longer receive security updates or technical assistance. This poses a significant risk to HIPAA compliance, as HIPAA requires healthcare providers to maintain up-to-date, secure systems to protect electronic protected health information (ePHI).

The HIPAA Security Rule mandates that organizations have procedures for detecting, guarding against, and reporting malicious software. Running unsupported software like Windows 10 after its end-of-support date violates this rule.

Recommended action steps:

  • Plan for Upgrades: Identify systems running Windows 10 and plan for upgrades to Windows 11 or other supported operating systems.
  • Assess Compatibility: Ensure your hardware can support Windows 11.
  • Back Up Data: Securely back up critical data before upgrading.

By taking proactive steps, organizations and individuals can mitigate the risks associated with Windows 10’s end of life and maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations.
