Obituaries: Dr. John Gilbert “Gil” Rana
Dr. John Gilbert “Gil” Rana, 74, also known to many as “Doc,” passed away at home on September 10th, 2023. He was born to Pat and Maureen (née Gilbert) Rana on February 17, 1949, and grew up along with his sister Margo in the apartment above the variety store owned by his parents on Main Street in Bridgehampton, New York.
After experiencing successful chiropractic treatment, Gil decided to become a chiropractor and moved to Illinois in the mid-1970s to attend the National College of Chiropractic. He started his chosen profession in 1978 in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. Ultimately he settled in Prospect Heights and became the area’s prominent chiropractic physician.
Gil was a car enthusiast especially for classic and luxury sports cars. He was an avid fan of Formula 1 racing; Crimson Tide college football; and traveling which led to many adventures near and far, especially trips to Japan to the delight of his many friends there. Finally, this tribute wouldn’t be complete without mentioning his favorite play “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” which he saw more times and places than could be counted!
He is survived by his companion of 38 years Karen Houck, and her family–son Christopher Houck (Jeannine), daughter Tricia Alfirevic (Ken) and grandchildren Amanda and Bradley; Aunt Katy Daniell and Uncle Bud Gilbert (Mary) in Florida; and many, many cousins. And a special thank you to a dear friend and care giver Myong Scott. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Margo, and several aunts and uncles.
His sense of humor and upbeat personality will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.
