License Renewal Deadline Extended to August 31, 2026 (CME Deadline Unchanged)
On Tuesday, the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation (IDFPR) announced that it has extended the 2026 deadline for license renewals to August 31, 2026. However, they did NOT extend the requirement to complete CME by July 31, 2026.
In an email to health systems around the state, IDFPR stated, “The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) has extended the deadline for Physician and Surgeon (036) and Chiropractic Physician (038) licensees to renew their licenses without a late fee from July 31, 2026 to August 31, 2026″ [emphasis added].

When the ICS inquired about the extension, the department indicated that it has been monitoring the renewal rate for all physicians across the state. After seeing a renewal rate that is lower than anticipated and considering potential confusion surrounding their “transition to new data and operating systems,” IDFPR extended the renewal deadline.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The IDFPR variance document does not extend the deadline to complete CME beyond July 31, 2026, and the Department has confirmed to the ICS that all CME should be completed by July 31 or prior. All other statutes, rules, and regulations will apply.
