The ICS regularly reminds members to register corporate entities with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). These entities include medical corporations, professional service corporations, and professional limited liability companies. Owners must obtain corporate licenses, in addition to individual physician licenses, for these organizations to operate legally. The following leading Illinois case illustrates what can happen when a professional service corporation fails to obtain a corporate license, in this instance resulting in a major health plan payer denying payment in a substantial number and dollar amount of claims.
